Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire offer an abundance of scenic walks, ideal for anyone staying in Aberdeen or the surrounding areas. Whether you’re looking for peaceful strolls through green spaces or a more adventurous outing with stunning coastal views, there’s something for everyone. If you’re staying at one of our apartments, here are some fantastic walks to enjoy during your visit.
Nestled in the heart of Aberdeen, Seaton Park is a beautiful green space that’s perfect for a leisurely walk. The park’s well-maintained gardens, open spaces, and river views make it a great spot. Follow the path along the River Don to explore more serene surroundings, with opportunities to spot wildlife and enjoy peaceful riverside views.
A walk along Aberdeen Beach is a must for visitors. See our earlier blog post on some of the food trucks that can be enjoyed here! Start at the Beach Esplanade and enjoy the expansive views of the North Sea. On a clear day, the coastline is stunning, with the waves crashing against the shore. Continue your walk toward the charming and historic fishing village of Footdee, known locally as “Fittie.” Its quirky, old-fashioned cottages and quiet lanes provide a fascinating contrast to the more modern parts of Aberdeen.
For those who enjoy a mix of gardens and woodlands, Hazelhead Park is a lovely choice. Located just a short drive from Aberdeen city centre, the park boasts rose gardens, wooded areas, and even a small animal enclosure. It’s a great place to unwind, have a picnic, or explore the more natural parts of the park. The park’s extensive network of paths means you can enjoy a short walk or extend it into a more leisurely exploration of the grounds.
A little further out from the city, Bennachie is one of Aberdeenshire’s most iconic walking spots. With several routes varying in difficulty, this range of hills offers something for everyone. For a more challenging hike, the ascent to the summit of Mither Tap offers incredible views across Aberdeenshire. If you prefer a gentler stroll, the lower trails provide beautiful woodland and moorland scenery.
If you want to combine a walk with a bit of Scottish history, head to Crathes Castle. Located about 30 minutes from Aberdeen, this 16th-century castle is surrounded by beautiful gardens and expansive woodland trails. The estate offers a variety of walking routes that range from short, leisurely paths to longer walks that take you deeper into the surrounding countryside. See our earlier blog post for more information on Crathes and other castles to be explored!
For a walk with history, the Old Deeside Railway Line offers a unique experience. The disused railway has been converted into a walking and cycling path that stretches from Aberdeen to Banchory, following the River Dee. It’s a relatively flat and easy walk, making it suitable for all ages and abilities. Along the way, you’ll pass through picturesque landscapes and small villages, offering plenty of opportunities for a break or a picnic.
Duthie Park, located on the banks of the River Dee, is one of Aberdeen’s most popular green spaces. The park is home to the David Welch Winter Gardens, where you can enjoy a variety of exotic plants, even on a rainy day. After exploring the park, follow the River Dee for a peaceful riverside walk with lovely views of the water and the chance to spot local wildlife.
Just a short drive from Aberdeen, Stonehaven offers one of the most scenic coastal walks in the region. Starting in the town, follow the path along the cliffs to Dunnottar Castle (see our blog post for more info), one of Scotland’s most dramatic ruined castles, perched on a clifftop. The rugged coastline, dramatic sea views, and the history of the castle make this walk a true highlight for visitors to Aberdeenshire.
Staying at our Aberdeen apartments gives you easy access to some of the most beautiful walks in the region. Whether you prefer a gentle park stroll or a challenging hill hike, Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire have it all. Be sure to pack your walking shoes and take advantage of these stunning routes during your stay. Whether you’re seeking nature, history, or a bit of both, the region’s walking paths offer something special for every visitor.
