Aberdeen Forest Walks: Beautiful Places to Explore this September

Aberdeen Forest Walks: Beautiful Places to Explore this September

September is a lovely time to get out and explore Aberdeen. The summer crowds have eased, the evenings still have plenty of daylight and the first signs of autumn are beginning to appear across the woodland and countryside.

If you are staying at our Bucksburn Apartments, you don’t have to go far to find places for a walk. There are plenty of Aberdeen forest walks, woodland paths and parks close by, making it easy to fit a walk in during your stay.

Here are some of our favourite Aberdeen forest walks and woodland trails to consider this September:

1. Elrick Country Park

Elrick Country Park is a great option if you want to enjoy some fresh air without travelling too far from the apartment.

The park has a mixture of woodland, open countryside and walking paths, so there is plenty to see as you make your way around.

September is a particulary nice time to visit, with the leaves starting to change colour and cooler temperatures making it much more comfortable for a longer walk.

Good for: Families, dog walkers and an easy afternoon walk.

2. Kirkhill Forest

If you’re looking for a proper forest walk, Kirkhill Forest near Kinellar is well worth a visit.

There are several paths through the woodland, with the Tappie Tower being one of the highlights. The tower sits at a higher point in the forest and gives you views across Aberdeen and the surrounding countryside.

The walk is a bit more of an outing than a quick stroll but that’s what makes it a good choice if you have a free afternoon during your stay.

In September, the changing colours of the trees makes the woodland look particulary nice so it’s a great time to bring your camera.

Good for: Woodland scenery, longer walks and views across the surrounding area.

3. Countesswells Forest

Countesswells Forest offers a lovely mix of woodland and open scenery.

The paths are well suited to a relaxed walk and there are plenty of quieter sections to enjoy being surrounded by the trees and countryside.

It is also an interesting area to visit as the woodland continues to develop with a variety of native trees and plants being introduced.

If you are looking for one of the more peaceful Aberdeen forest walks, Countesswells is a good one to add to your list.

Good for: A peaceful walk, nature lovers and getting away from the city for a while.

4. Foggieton Forest

For something a little quieter, head towards Foggieton Forest.

It is close to Countesswells but offers a more secluded feel. There are a couple of walking routes to choose from including the Warblers Trail and the longer Ladyhill Trail.

One of the highlights is the mature beech woodland with some of the trees more than 150 years old.  It is the sort of place where you can slow down and enjoy the surroundings rather than worrying about how quickly you are getting around the trail.

September is a particularly good month to visit as the woodland starts to turn into the warm autumn shades.

Good for: A quieter walk, mature woodland and nature spotting.

5. The Bucksburn Valley

You don’t always need to get in the car and head deep into the countryside to find a good forest walk.

The Bucksburn Valley offers some surprisingly peaceful scenery, despite being close to Aberdeen. Walking routes follow the Bucks Burn through woodland, farmland and marshland giving you a chance to see a very different side of the area.

For guests staying at our apartments, this can be a convenient way to explore the local area and get some fresh air without having to make a full day of it.

Good for: Exploring close to the apartments and seeing a quieter side of Aberdeen.

Why September is a Great Time for a Forest Walk

There is something particularly nice about walking through woodland at the end of summer.

The days are still reasonaby long and you may start to see the first autumn colours appearing, with leaves gradually changing from green to shades of yellow, orange and red.

It’s also a great time of year for wildlife spotting and photography, especially when the morning or evening light comes through the trees.

Of course Scottish weather can be unpredictable so it is worth checking the forecast before heading out and bringing a waterproof jacket and sensible footwear. A dry September day can be beaiutiful but the woodland paths can become muddy after rain!

Staying at our Apartments?

One of the advantages of staying at our Aberdeen apartments is having a comfortable base for exploring both the city and the countryside around it.

You can spend the morning exploring Aberdeen, head out to explore one of these Aberdeen forest walks in the afternoon and then come back to your apartment to relax.

Whether you’re visiting Aberdeen for work, bringing the family for a few days or just looking for a change of scenery, there are plenty of opportunities to get outdoors.

So if you’re staying with us this September, pack your walking shoes and make some time to explore a few of the Aberdeen forest walks nearby. You might be surprised by just how much green space there is around the city!
